The challenge

Our client’s strategic objective was to differentiate in the marketplace by building a powerful brand that was full of character. We were commissioned to design and implement an ‘iconic’ development programme to enhance leaders’ ability to inspire people to live this brand.

The solution

We designed a programme around differentiators of future high performance: emotional strategic and learning agility. Critical to the success of this programme was the unprecedented levels of senior executive involvement, the amount of real work (as opposed to exercises) and the involvement of followers both in providing feedback, engaging with leaders between modules and in turning up to make modules very ‘live’ experiences.

The programme itself was an eight-month program run with cohorts of twelve participants. The three conceptual dimensions of the design were: Leading Myself, Leading Our People, Leading Our Business. These were delivered over four modules.

The first module saw leaders testing and refining their levels of self-awareness and sense of purpose working with a rural Maasai community in Tanzania.

The second module saw leaders gathering feedback and engaging directly with their followers to understand their leadership impact and to focus on their strengths and signature style.

The third module saw leaders testing their ability to inspire with the help of a singer and voice coach and a surprise business challenge accompanied by the arrival of busloads of followers to be communicated with.

The fourth module saw leaders really grow their commercial understanding with the requirement to build a live, commercial model of the current business with the help of graphic cartoon artists and under the watchful and challenging eye of the most commercially incisive Executive team member.
